Interview with Lesley Frenz

Lesley Frenz

Yeah, so that was just you know, my first experience with really being on what felt like a real rugged mountain landscape. You know, we have small mountains in North Georgia. You know the foothills of the Smoky Mountains are really, it's nothing compared to 14,000 foot Mount Rainier covered in snow. And so yeah,

Beverly Aarons

If you had to use a few words to describe what that felt like when you first stepped on that mountain, what would they be?

Lesley Frenz

Oh my gosh. It just filled me with complete joy and peace. And it was transformative in that I knew that I belonged out here. This is what I've been looking for my whole life. This place where it feels so wild and rugged. And you know, you can drive a couple of hours outside of the city and be completely alone. And there is these incredible breathtaking mountains.

Beverly Aarons

And there is kind of there seems to be some kind of solitude in your work. Right? You could imagine yourself as the viewer in that landscape, alone. Right? That's my interpretation of it, but is that your intention? To kind of give a feeling of solitude?

Lesley Frenz

I don't know that that's an intention per se. But I definitely you know, I never put figures in my work, intentionally. Because I do want the viewers to be able to place themselves there. And maybe there's a feeling of solitude because these are taken from these moments in which they're you usually isn't anyone else, but me or my husband. That might be where that's coming from. It's not necessarily an intentional aspect of my work, but I don't mind that it's there. That's a big part of why we love hiking and backpacking because it does kind of get us out, away, alone, away from you know, the hustle and bustle and people and the responsibilities and the modern world. The phone goes off. No emails, no texts, no social media. That's a big part of why we do it.

Beverly Aarons

On your blog, you said that your aim isn't necessarily to capture a place but to capture a moment. What makes a moment worthy of being captured?

Lesley Frenz

I wouldn't say it's a specific moment, necessarily, but the feeling of that moment. And so what would make that worthy would be is if that's a time in which I feel completely immersed into the landscape completely connected to it, completely enveloped by it. I've had a few standout moments in which there was this very palpable energy around me. And where I could be still. I was so still, that everything else around me was still moving. And you know, the birds are still flying, the bees are still buzzing, the wind is still blowing the leaves in the trees, but I'm there and I'm still, and I can feel all of that energy moving around me. And if I'm still enough, I can feel that moving through me. Part of all of that, and that is really the feeling that I try to go back to and that I'm really trying to convey through my work.

Beverly Aarons

Nice, powerful. So, tell me about the upcoming show. Is this new work that you're presenting?

Lesley Frenz

It is it's a whole new body of work is still in progress, still very much in progress. Two weeks left to paint. Sorry, my cat is on my table. Two weeks left. I'm very much in the throes of the final push. And he has always very stressful. So this is a group of landscapes that are kind of very much based on that feeling that I just described to you. And in connection with that, they're also inspired by and connected to my mother, and the loss of my mother, and how I've been grieving that loss, and how I had a moment of intense connection to her this past autumn. And how that led me to this realization that though she's gone, she's never truly gone. That she like all of us is a part of this world, no matter whether her physical body is decayed, she's still here, she is still around and a part of me and I carry with her everywhere I go. So, in every landscape I'm in, she's also there. So that's kind of the feeling that I'm trying to convey through this show and through the landscapes that are inspired by places where that feeling has happened for me.

Beverly Aarons

Well, thank you for sharing that. And I'm sorry that your mother passed away.

Lesley Frenz

Thank you. It's, it's been a long time now. It's been almost eight years, but it's still very, very close to you, then you know that it's always like right there, kind of under the surface.

Lesley Frenz

Lesley Frenz

Lesley Frenz
