When I first met Lady A in the summer of 2020, I was inspired and moved by her David and Goliath battle with the well-funded and powerful country group, Lady Antebellum. Unless you’ve been sequestered on an island (with no internet) for the past two years, then you probably know the story: Millionaire country group gets called out for racism so they decide to take the name of an independent Black woman blues singer, because ‘Black Lives Matter.’ Yep, that happened. But when I decided to feature Lady A in Artists Up Close, I didn’t want to focus on that story which has nearly overshadowed the talent, courage, grit, and prolific production of this artist. I wanted to tell the story of how Lady A has earned her reputation as ‘the hardest working woman in blues, soul, funk and gospel.’

Lady A, who works a day job at the City of Seattle while running her music career full-time, doesn’t shy away from ‘doing the work’ as they say. “Sometimes I'm working until 11:00 pm at night,” Lady A said. “First thing I do in the morning is say my prayers, then I look at both my phones: my work phone and my Lady A phone. Then I check my calendar.”

There aren’t many moments when Lady A isn’t taking a meeting, responding to emails, on tour, chatting with her booking agent, recording music, or advancing one of her many nonprofit or civic passion projects. She serves on the board of the Rhapsody Project, is a vocal coach, a mentor to youth, and produces two radio shows: one for blues and the other for gospel. And that’s not a complete list of everything Lady A has going on in her adventurous life. Even as I was interviewing her over the phone, she was packing to move into her new home and preparing to travel to Sweden for a performance. Maybe I should start calling her Super Lady A.

Lady A was born Anita White in Seattle in 1958 at the height of Jim Crow. At the time, Seattle was racially segregated and downtown businesses had virtually no Black employees, except for cleaning staff and plantation-themed waitresses. She spent part of her childhood living in the Rainier Vista public housing projects where she was raised by a single mother. She and her four siblings were poor by every conventional definition of the word, but Lady A’s childhood was rich in other ways.

“We never wanted for anything,” Lady A said. “I mean, if we were poor, I didn't know it. You know? We didn't know it. My mom worked and my mom went to school. She graduated and became a teacher. Even though we lived in the projects, I don’t remember missing out on anything in my life. I played basketball. I ran track. I was a

cheerleader. And I became the first Black homecoming queen at Lincoln High School [in 1976].” She also had a girl band called Black Pearls, whose signature style included “black velvet hot pants, white ruffle shirts, and white go-go boots.” They once covered the Carole King song Feel the Earth Under My Feet in a school talent show. The memory of those times made Lady A giggle as she confidently insisted that her childhood never lacked anything important. A matter of fact, it was her mother who inspired her own ethos of hard work.

“My mom taught us how to survive,” Lady A said. By the time she was a teen, Lady A was working and buying her own clothes and shoes. Her first official job was at Central Area Motivation Program (CAMP) where she babysat younger kids. Anyone working there was supposed to be at least 15 years old, but Lady A lied about her age so she could start working at just thirteen. Her next job, working as a hostess at the original ACT Theatre, fueled her budding desire to go into show business.

“I just liked being around all those actors and actresses. That was just my thing. I was in seventh heaven,” she chuckled as she recounted that time in her life.

She was already setting the groundwork for living life on her own terms. But her willful personality eventually conflicted with her mother. By the time Lady A was 17 years old, she had moved out of her mother’s home. The reason?

“Because I was doing something that I wasn't supposed to be doing,” Lady A said cryptically. “My mom was one of those old school moms. ‘You want to be grown, then you don't live here.’ And so, I moved out.”

Lady A said that her mom didn’t allow her to hang out with whoever she wanted and go wherever she wanted. And after a few more carefully worded comments on the subject she added, “But there are reasons that some of those people are not here today, you know, for doing the very thing that she [my mom] told me not to do.”

It was a lesson that she grew to appreciate as a more mature woman. But it was only the first of many. When I spoke to Lady A in 2021, one year after her battle with Lady Antebellum first began (a conflict that’s now resolved) she described the experience as mentally exhausting. She would later tell me that she nearly had a heart attack from all of the stress of that battle and the daily grind of her work schedule. She was trying to do too much, all by herself.

“Nobody's an island, you can’t do it by yourself,” Lady A said. She was going non-stop in 2021 when the stress began to mount to the point that she had to take medication. “I was really ill and under a lot of stress. My doctor told me, ‘I’ve never seen you like this.’ I was trying to be strong but the stress was coming out of me, and I didn’t even notice it. But people around me were noticing it. They said, ‘You need to rest, you’re moving too much.’ “

That’s when Lady A began to reassess how she was running her life, specifically her unwillingness to trust others to do things she needed done. Up until recently, she wasn’t willing to delegate some tasks because she valued her independence. If something went wrong, she wanted to have only herself to blame.

“I've always done everything myself. You know? Trying to be the manager, be the vocalist, be the producer, be the one making the reservations. Doing it all,” Lady A said. “But now, in this last year, I've learned to let some things go.”

At 63 years old, Lady A is a living example of what it looks like to sustain a multi-decade career as an artist. But what advice would she give young emerging musicians?

“I think self-care is so important,” Lady A said, later adding that self-belief is also at the foundation of any artist’s success. “That didn't happen [for me] until I turned 50. [That’s when] I really believed in what I was doing. I think just prayer and the fact that I had people who believed in me more than I believed in myself. People like my producer, John Oliver III, who really believed in what I was doing, when I didn't believe it. You know, I almost gave up singing at 50. We had been making all this money and having all this fun and going to all these different places, but I wasn't enjoying it.”

While she had always been someone who lived life on her terms, at that time she had found herself in a rut where she had begun doing what others expected of her.

“And then I came into myself and decided, I don't want to do it anymore,” Lady A said. “But if I do, I've got to do it my way. And then I had to figure that out. And as I figured it out, I became more comfortable.”

Today, one part of doing it her way means creating community with other blues artists and doing the kinds of gigs that she can be proud of. Once a month she meets with 26 women of color musicians (mostly Jazz and Blues singers) from all over the country — and at least one Canadian. They network, share information about the industry, and offer each other opportunities they might not discover otherwise. The meetings are virtual but that hasn’t lessened the positive impact on Lady A’s life and career. She’s now doing gigs that she wasn’t able to get booked on before.

“We see all these festivals and these blues cruises, and there are not that many black women on them,” Lady A said. “You don't see them. And that is one of the things that we're trying to change.”

When she connects with festival organizers, she encourages them to diversify their stages. She challenges them to question why they keep inviting the same blues singers repeatedly. But while she’s motivated to help improve how the music industry operates, she’s not depending on and waiting for anyone else to create the type of shows she wants to be in.

“I don't go after those gigs anymore,” said Lady A. “Because I can produce a gig myself here in Seattle by just bringing women, or men. I've done the Big Blues Blowout, where I brought Nelly Tiger Travis from Chicago and Dexter Allen and Bobby Rush from Mississippi. I produce my own shows, because I feel like if I have to keep begging to get on a show, then that's not the show for me.”

I admired her fierce independence but I could also sense her frustration at feeling excluded from some stages despite being a talented and skilled vocalist. She said that “it’s being a blessing” to have a crossover audience in Seattle but that there have been very real challenges.

“I'm good at what I do,” Lady A said. “But you would think that after all these years of being in Seattle and being known in Seattle, that I could play places like Jazz Alley [and The Triple Door]. But like I said, I don't beg anybody for anything, because I can produce it on my own. And those that want to hear me, come to hear me.”

Even while facing some exclusion, Lady A was clear that she values every single fan, no matter how few the number. At her shows, she often gives away carefully curated swag bags because she wants fans to “feel special.” And she wants to create an experience where fans can find comfort in her music despite the inevitable pains of life.

“I had a fan come up to me at the last show [a Martin Luther King show],” Lady A said. “And she told me that a song that I sang touched her heart because her mother had just died, and her mother would have loved that song. That means more to me than anything. All it takes is one person. I mean, it's nice, you know, when people want your autograph, and that kind of thing. It's nice, but what did they really get from it? I'm not discounting everybody else that comes. But if just one person comes up to me, that's all I need. We always get more than that. But just that one special person that says what they actually got from the show, that means I did my job. That means I did what I set out to do. What God blessed me to do, which is to bless somebody else. My motto on my website, on my gospel show, on my blues show, I always say: ‘We are here, so be blessed and be a blessing.’ That's why I wake up every morning.”

Tal vez debería empezar a llamarla Super Dama A.

¿Sabes?

' Quieres crecer, entonces no vives aquí'.

Midoctor me dijo: 'Nunca te he visto así'.

"Siempre he hecho todo yo mismo. ¿Ylo sabes? "

Yep, hilo lilitokea. Lakini nilipoamua kumshirikisha Lady A katika Wasanii Up Close, sikutaka kuangazia  hadithi hiyo ambayo imekaribia kufunika  talanta,  ujasiri, ukakamavu,  na  uzalishaji mzuri wa msanii huyu. Nilitaka  kusimulia hadithi ya jinsi Lady A alivyojipatia sifa yake kama 'the hardest  w orkin g  woman in blues, soul, funk and gospel.'

Labda nianze kumuita Super Lady A.

"Hatukuwahi kutaka chochote," Lady A alisema. "Namaanisha, kama tungekuwa maskini, sikujua. Unajua? Hatukujua. Mama yangu alifanya kazi na mama yangu akaenda shule. Alihitimu na kuwa mwalimu.  Even ingawa tuliishi kwenye miradi, sikumbuki kukosa chochote maishani mwangu.  Nilicheza mpira wa kikapu. Nilikimbia kufuatilia. Nilikuwa mshangiliaji. "Waliwahi kufunika wimbo wa Carole King Feel the Earth Under My Feet katika onyesho la vipaji shuleni.

"Mama yangu alitufundisha jinsi ya kuishi," Lady A alisema.

Sababu?

"Hakuna mtu island, huwezi kufanya hivyo mwenyewe," Lady A alisema. "

Hapo ndipo Mama A alipoanza kutathmini upya jinsi alivyokuwa akiendesha maisha yake, hasa kutokuwa tayari kuwaamini wengine kufanya mambo aliyohitaji kufanywa.  Hadi hivi karibuni, hakuwa tayari kukabidhi baadhi ya majukumu kwa sababu alithamini uhuru wake. Kama kuna kitu kilienda vibaya, alitaka kujilaumu yeye mwenyewe tu.

"Siku zote nimekuwa nikifanya kila kitu mimi mwenyewe. You anajua? Kujaribu kuwa meneja, awe mwimbaji, awe mtayarishaji, awe ndiye anayefanya kutoridhishwa.  Doing yote," alisema Lady A.  "Lakini sasa,  katika mwaka huu uliopita, nimejifunza kuacha baadhi ya mambo yaende. "

"Tunaona sherehe hizi zote nahizi b lues cruises, na hakuna wanawake wengi weusi juu yao," Lady A alisema. "Hamuoni.

Sipunguzi kila mtu mwingine anayekuja. "Ndio maana huwa naamka kila asubuhi. "
